“Compassion is not a relationship between the healer and the wounded. It's a relationship between equals. Only when we know our own darkness well can we be present with the darkness of others.” - Pema Chödrön

About Genevieve

I am committed to being of service by supporting individuals in their personal journeys towards health, healing and well-being. I believe in creating safe, creative and warm spaces to have therapeutic conversations. These are conversations where people can define what health means for them, and orient themselves towards what really matters in their lives.

I have a Masters degree in Counselling Psychology from the University of Victoria, and have provided 1:1 counselling and group facilitation for over 10 years. I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor with the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors (RCC#14011) and I am a certified EMDR therapist. To learn more about my education, experience and professional development see the menu below.

How can I help you?

I can help you reconnect to joy, purpose, and meaning. Whether you are moving through grief, burnout, relationship stress, or medical illness, I hold a space where you can learn to be kinder to yourself and remember your inherent wisdom.

I consider it a privilege to support people who want to explore the connection between their mental, emotional, physical and spiritual well-being. I am devoted to helping people learn how to hold curiosity and compassion for the signals their bodies, minds and emotions are giving them.

People sometimes come to therapy wanting or thinking they need to be “fixed”. This is not how I see a healing therapeutic relationship. I do not believe we need to be “fixed.” I believe we all have problems and wounds that need support, awareness and personal responsibility. I believe we are whole exactly as we are- wounds and all.

I work with people who take personal responsibility for their health and healing, and I believe it my soul’s work and privilege to companion people in their healing work and bring a bit more lightness to this world.

I can support you with:

  • Anxiety and depression

  • Burnout and compassion fatigue

  • Caregiving support

  • Chronic illness and degenerative diseases (eg. cancer)

  • Emotion regulation skills, particularly through mindfulness

  • Family dynamics

  • Grief and loss

  • Prioritizing self-care and building trust with your body

  • Reconnecting to spirit and creativity

  • Recovery and healing after a cancer diagnosis

  • Romantic relationship support

  • Self-Love through Self-Compassion

  • Stress reduction and Joy enhancement

  • Trauma recovery

I work with people from many walks of life. I have a keen interest and expertise counselling folks impacted by chronic illness (such as cancer) and the people who support them; this includes loved ones and health care professionals. I am also passionate about supporting people who want to explore mindfulness and relationship dynamics with partners, family and friends.

  • This is a great question and an important one. First and foremost I take a client centered approach, which means I often begin sessions with a question and focus on: “what do you need support in?” and how can my skills best support that. This is where we begin. I want to collaborate with you to determine how we can best get what you want out of your sessions. Relationship building is at the heart of my counselling approach, and I aim to create a safe, non-judgmental, creative and authentic therapeutic experience.

I am invested in my professional development and continuing to learn and hone my therapeutic practice. Below are some therapeutic modalities that I have training in, which I integrate in my sessions when appropriate.

    -Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)

-EMDR (See the drop down for more information on this powerful therapy method)

    -Trauma Informed Practice

    -Interpersonal Therapy

    -Creativity and Art as Therapy

    -Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)

  • I graduated in 2015 with an MA in Counselling Psychology from the University of Victoria, and I have a BA in Psychology from UVIC (2010). Through my master’s level education, I was fortunate to be given incredible clinical skills training as well as invaluable research experience. I focused my graduate master’s thesis on the lived experience of adolescent siblings who had a brother or sister with cancer. More information about this research can be found in the knowledge mobilization video which is accessible on youtube through clicking this link: Siblings You Matter.

  • I have provided 1:1 counselling, workshops and group facilitation since 2010. My counselling experience began in 2009 through the lay-counsellor training program at Citizens Counselling, which inspired me to pursue professional training in the Masters of Counselling Psychology program from the University of Victoria. In 2015 I joined the clinical counselling team at InspireHealth, Supportive Cancer Care, where I counselled patients and their support people impacted by cancer from 2015-2022. I established Genevieve Stonebridge Counselling in 2016, when I started my private practice. Since 2009 it has been a privilege to work with folks from many backgrounds in various clinical settings supporting adults, families, couples and children. I also have the incredible privilege to be part of the Anew Research Collaborative team through Royal Roads University, where we are working to reshape the young adult cancer care system in BC.

    WHAT IS EMDR THERAPY?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is an extensively researched, effective approach to psychotherapy that has been proven to help people recover from trauma and other distressing life experiences, including PTSD, anxiety, depression, and panic disorders.

    RESEARCH AND RECOGNITION:

Dr. Andrew Leeds maintains a comprehensive list of peer-reviewed journal articles and professional books covering the most up-to-date research on EMDR therapy, which is accessible in this link.

The American Psychiatric Association, the American Psychological Association, the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, the U.S. Dept. of Veterans Affairs/Dept. of Defense, The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, and the World Health Organization and numerous other national and international organizations recognize EMDR therapy as an effective treatment.

CAN EMDR THERAPY BE DONE ONLINE?

Yes, absolutely. I offer EMDR in virtual sessions as well as in person.

  • People are often curious what draws someone to the role of a counsellor.

I was propelled on this path of service through an early curiousity of how I can be of service. I was a peer counsellor in high school, and in early adulthood started my own therapy with an amazing therapist who combined art therapy and somatic experiencing to help me in my healing.

My personal life experiences with my blended family, as well as facing my mortality at a young age, inform how I came to this work. I was diagnosed with cancer at age 18, and also companioned my grandfather in his death as his primary caregiver in my early twenties. These big life experiences early in my life catalyzed within me a profound recognition of impermanence, the need for self-reflection and good therapy :)

Congruence and compassion are core values in my approach to therapy. As Pema Chödrön says: “Compassion is not a relationship between the healer and the wounded. It's a relationship between equals. Only when we know our own darkness well can we be present with the darkness of others.”

I became a counsellor to companion others with their pain in order to reduce suffering. I believe that we all have our own inner wisdom, and my role is to help others come home to this truth and find the light within. My intention is to bring more light to this world.
